Main Facts
Greece was one of the oldest civilizations there was. The people of Greece lived near mountains and are very close to the Mediterranean Sea like most civilizations. There would be hot and dry summers and it would just be chilly and rainy in the winter but never exactly freezing. In ancient Greece, they believed in multiple gods; this is called polytheism, though they mainly worshiped Zeus, the sky god. So really they are mostly polytheistic. This civilization normally traded through sea routes because they lived near the Mediterranean Sea. The Greek traded pottery, silver, olive oil, and wine.
Geography
Greece is located on a peninsula in southern Europe and is surrounded by water on 3 sides. It is mostly made of mountainous terrain but 1/5 of Greece itself is made of islands. The mountains provide a natural protective barrier. The area and climate of Greece is good for growing wheat, barley, sorghum, and olives (possibly warm). Since no matter where you are in Greece, you would always be at most 72 hours away from the sea so the Greek people never failed at finding seafood to eat.
Social Chain
Normally, in Ancient Greece, men would have the most power. If it was a man born into a rich family with full citizenship, they would be considered "powerful" in the Greek community. They would be able to vote in the government they call democracy. In the government democracy, citizens would be able to vote on every problem. It has impacted in our world today but instead of direct democracy (the kind the Athenian Greeks used which was voting on every problem) we use representative democracy where we choose a representative to speak for us.
Most of the social chain was broken up according to the differences such as being a slave and citizen. The most powerful would be having full citizenship which means the person is a man and is born from parents from Greece. Aristocrats would most likely appear at the top of the social classes, followed by craftsmen, artists, and tradesmen. In the lower class area we find the freed people; people who were once slaves but were freed by their masters. And at the bottom of the classes were, like most civilizations, the slaves.
Woman in Greece
Women in ancient Greece were not expected to be part of events and were owned by their husbands. They had no say in marriage. But in some city-states of Greece, such as Sparta, where woman can participate in social and were well educated. This was because the Spartans knew that in order for the women to produce strong and smart warriors, they needed the mother to be smart and strong. But otherwise, they were not as important and could not own property.
Greek Language
Our language, English, has Greek roots. One example is the word alphabet. Alpha is "a" in the Greek alphabet and beta is "b" in the Greek alphabet.
